I live in a pre-war building in New York City and have a pivoting Rixson Jr door between my kitchen and the dining room. The door and hinges are 100 years old. I went online and found a video from Richard Howard /AB supply regarding door removal(I needed to make my door frame as wide as possible to accommodate the delivery of a new refrigerator) This video was so clear and precise that it really helped me figure out how to get the door safely off the hinge and put it back on. I cannot thank you enough because this was keeping me up at night!! Very few people know how to work with this kind of door.
I was attempting to adjust a door closing mechanism where I work. The mechanism is about 56 years old. After many attempts to find information online, I reached out to Architectural Builders Supply. After sending some photos, Richard got back to me and encouraged me to call back for an explanation of how to adjust the closing mechanism. His expanation was patient and thourough and I was able to adjust the door in under a minute--a very pleasant converstion indeed! It was obvious from the outset that Richard and Architectural Builders Supply were primarily concerned with helping me fix my existing door rather than making a sale. I know who I will contact in the future for any fixtures replacments I need to make. 10 STARS!
I wish I could put 5 stars here but I had a terrible experience with this company. First - the closers that were restored were great, my complaints come purely from customer service (or lack of) from the owner, Richard. Kaleb, his employee, is great and honestly is incredibly more professional than Richard (Richard has absolutely no professional integrity). They’re lucky to have Kaleb. Kaleb made a mistake and sent us the wrong refurbished closers. When I called to figure out what happened, Richard said while yelling, “I would bet money that Kaleb didn’t make a mistake and it’s your fault” he then proceeded to say “whoever made the mistake is paying for it in the end” aggressively. I told him it’s bold to make claims like that without investigating. I mentioned my client was annoyed since this entire process started in December and we are now in March. He said while yelling, “your clients should be grateful we even fixed these for him” after my client paid $3300 for two closers and waited 4 months - he should be grateful… right right. I was honestly in shock and just told him I think it’s best he transfer me to Kaleb since this conversation is not productive. Kaleb found in his notes he made the mistake and apologized. He proceeded to fix the problem. I’ve never been so disrespected in my life by someone like Richard was to me. I hope the bad karma will catch up to him this year. You can’t go around treating people this badly without consequences. He’s obviously used to treating people like this, as he was so quick in his response when I was kind and understanding from the start.
Richard Howard at Architectural Builders Supply, Inc. makes genuinely great YouTube videos—credit where it’s due. His content is informative and well-produced. That said, my direct experience with him on the phone was disappointing. I called to ask about the HPC CDJ-3 and inquired whether they offer wholesale pricing for locksmiths. I clearly explained that I am a locksmith. Richard immediately said no, and his tone shifted noticeably. He went on to say that customers “would never know what these tools are for,” which was his justification for not offering wholesale pricing. The call ended abruptly with “okay buddy… yeah, we don’t offer wholesale… my name is Richard, bye.” It came off as rude and dismissive, especially for a straightforward business question. I’m not sure why asking about wholesale pricing triggered that reaction, but it was unnecessary. Richard—keep making the great YouTube content, but it may be worth reconsidering how you engage with locksmiths nationwide. We’re professionals, and we can help your company grow too.
ZERO STARS! Ordered some Hager drop plates. Realized they were the wrong size. CSR said they would be charging us a 50% restocking fee. Tried to say that's what Hager charges. The boxes have not been opened. Never offered to exchange for the correct ones. Will never do business with ABS again. Complete rip off.
